NATIONAL SCREENING PROGRAMME
Cervical screening
From age 25 · born 1980 onwards
Who it’s for
The national programme invites women born in 1980 or later, starting at 25. Invitations are every three years, changing to five years at age 50. If you have a cervix and are unsure whether you are included, ask the Centre or your GP.
Before your test
Book outside your period. Follow the official advice on products to avoid before the test. Ask in advance about a female clinician or having someone accompany you.
What happens
A clinician uses a speculum and a small brush to collect cells from the cervix. It takes a few minutes. Tell them if it hurts; you can ask to pause.
Results & next steps
Before you leave, ask when and how results will be shared. Some results need a repeat sample or a closer examination called colposcopy; follow your result letter.
