A PRACTICAL GUIDE

STI & HIV testing

When to test and where to access care in Malta.

Testing is based on exposure and sexual history, not waiting for a particular birthday.

When should I get tested?

Ask after unprotected sex, a new partner, a partner’s diagnosis or another possible exposure. Infections may have no symptoms. For people at higher ongoing HIV risk, Malta’s official testing page advises at least yearly HIV testing; the clinic can recommend a more individual schedule.

Why does the timing matter?

Tests have different window periods, so an early negative result may need repeating. Give the clinic the exposure date and ask which test and repeat date apply. Do not delay contacting the clinic while waiting for a window period to pass.

Possible HIV exposure within the last 72 hours? Contact the GU Clinic or attend A&E immediately to ask about PEP. This needs urgent assessment, rather than waiting for a screening test.

How do I access testing in Malta?

No GP referral is needed for the Health and Wellbeing / GU service. Call 2123 1231 for triage and an appointment, or the GU appointment lines 2545 7491 / 2545 7494. Services include Mater Dei and community clinics in Malta and Gozo. Call before attending to confirm arrangements.

Depending on the exposure, testing may use blood, urine or swabs. Tell the clinician about oral or anal exposure so the correct sites can be tested. A cervical screening sample does not replace an STI screen.
