Targeted lung screening assesses risk before deciding whether a scan is useful.
What ages are relevant?
For context, England’s lung-screening service targets people aged 55–74 who currently smoke or have smoked. These are English programme criteria, not Malta eligibility rules. In Malta, discuss your smoking history with a GP and ask about current local assessment and referral options.
What might an assessment involve?
A clinician reviews smoking history and health risks. Where appropriate, screening uses a low-dose CT scan. Scans can lead to follow-up of uncertain findings. The EU recommends exploring targeted screening for people at higher risk; that recommendation does not establish an individual entitlement in Malta.
When should I seek help instead?
Do not wait for screening if you have a persistent or changing cough, cough up blood, become increasingly breathless or lose weight unexpectedly. Seek medical advice promptly. Ask your GP about stopping-smoking support at any age.
